This may be a blog about consignment shopping in the Philadelphia area, but believe me when I tell you there is a whole world of thrift stores beyond the Schuylkill River. Find out what Lauren Foster has to say about her experiences consigning in New York, Boston, and all over the world.
What are the reasons that you consign?
“I like to thrift because it is a good way to find one-of-a-kind items that no one else will have. Since fashion repeats itself, I find that thrifting is a great way to find the original versions of that season’s most popular trends. Also, thrifting is a good way to find unique pieces that are high-quality at a bargain price.”
How often do you consign?
“When I lived in Boston, I used to go to consignment stores every other week. Now, I really only get the chance when I go shopping in New York City. It’s better to go frequently because you never know when new merchandise is going to come in and the really good finds—like a vintage Chanel purse—tend to sell quickly.”
What is your favorite aspect of consignment shopping?
“I like the thrill of the hunt and finding designer clothing at a fraction of the price.”
What are some of your favorite finds that you have purchased at a consignment shop?
“My favorite finds include a vintage Yves Saint Laurent leather belt, an Oscar de la Renta silk scarf, and a Missoni off the shoulder top from the 1970s.”
What city do you usually consign in?
“I typically shop in New York City, but I’ve gone consigning in Boston, San Francisco, Paris, and Florence.”
What are your favorite consignment shops in New York City?
“I love the store Second Time Around, which has locations all over the country. In New York City there is one in SoHo and on the Upper East Side, and in Boston there is one on Newbury Street.”
Favorite consignment shop ever?
“I really loved Réciproque on Rue de La Pompe in Paris. It’s actually a series of vintage stores that carries high-end designer labels for both men and women. Réciproque is said to have the largest second-hand Chanel selection in all of Paris, but also stocks Hermés, Lanvin, Dior, Balmain, and others.”
What sort of advice or tips do you have for a successful consignment shopping experience?
“To have a great shopping experience you need time and patience. Sifting through racks of definite no’s can be tiring and frustrating, but it’ll be worth it in the end when you find that one piece you couldn’t bear to live without.”
